Abstract. Due to the slow kinetic sofoxygen reduction reaction at cathode of PEM fuel cell, high Pt catalyst loading is required to achieve practical current density. This causes high cost of PEM fuel cell and hinders its wide adoption. To address this grand challenge, extensive research has been performed in the last few decades. In this talk, I will discuss the application driven catalyst development requirements and major fundamental and relevant applied research progresses with a focus on our scaling up efforts on next generation PEM fuel cell catalysts performed at Argonne National Laboratory (USA) a few years ago. New product development progresses we made recently at GRINM (Guangdong) Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology will also be discussed.
